Senegal Project Update : ‘Rain, Forests, People’

We're very pleased that phase one of our ‘Rain, Forests, People’ project in Senegal is now completed. This project will make rural, farming communities in Sengal’s Fatick-Thiès region more resilient to the area’s increasing aridity, by reinforcing their agricultural sovereignty. The production of fodder for livestock, the improvement of soil fertility, reforestation, and the stemming of a rural exodus number amongst the anticipated results of this venture. Mr Mansour Ndiaye (Director of APAF-Senegal) is pictured above, in Ngarine village, explaining our joint project to members of this community last month.   > Read More

Constructing Rainwater Reservoirs in Senegal: The Calabash Tank

In our collaboration with APAF-Senegal, IRHA will establish rainwater-harvesting and irrigation techniques in the Fatick-Thiès region. We have chosen Calabash Tanks as rainwater reservoirs. The ‘Clean Water – Healthy Village project’ (degevuldewaterkruik) developed these simple, pot-like structures in Guinea-Bissau. This Dutch NGO provides trainers, enabling IRHA to teach farmers participating in 'Rain, Forests, People’ to build calabash cisterns. A five-day calabash workshop takes place this June. IRHA President, Han Heijnen, submits that ‘there are many parts of Africa and the wider world that can benefit from the Calabash experience’ (manual foreword). > Read more

A Field Visit to Kaolack

Expanding the ‘Rain, Forests, People’ Project in Senegal

IRHA have recently initiated a new ‘Rain, Forests, People’ project in the Kaolack region of Senegal. In 2013, we established a Blue School in this town, in partnership with Caritas Kaolack. We return to Kaolack with APAF-Senegal for this new, collaborative venture. Mr Mansour Ndiaye (Director of APAF-Senegal) and Nyeye Fatou Dieng (APAF Technical Operations Manager) are involved in the project. It will provide thirty farming families with a calabash tank to store harvested rainwater and support them in developing their own agroforestry islands, irrigated with rainwater.
